Champions!: UST wins UAAP Season 69 Finals basketball tournament vs Ateneo! Yay!

Quick post! (Edited)

Hear them roar!

The University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers finally ended the 10-year championship drought and won the UAAP Season 69 Basketball tournament, 74-76, against the Ateneo De Manila University Blue Eagles at the deciding Game 3 match just this afternoon at the Araneta Coliseum.

The Loyola-based cagers dominated the first half of the game, until the Espana-based cagers finally managed to inch past the Eagles at 3rd quarter. The two teams tied at 64 at the last quarter and went into overtime. With around 12.5 seconds on the shot clock, Ateneo’s Chris Tiu committed a foul against the Tigers. Second stringer Dylan Ababou failed to nail the first attempt on the free throw line. His second attempt, however, finally gave the Tigers the lead, 75-74.

After JC Intal’s failed attempt to score for the Eagles, Eric Salamat fouled Jun Cortez at 3.7 seconds. Cortez buried the first shot and missed his second, giving the Tigers a two-point edge against the Eagles, 76-74. The Eagles grabbed the rebound but Jai Reyes’ attempt at a long shot missed the basket.

The Tigers were considered as underdogs of this year’s basketball season, carrying a not-so-sterling 7-6 card into the Finals. The Tigers created a huge upset during the elimination when they became the first team to halt the 8-0 winning streak of the Eagles.

Jojo Duncil of UST was given the UAAP Season 69 Finals MVP Award. He scored 8 out of his 18 points during the last three minutes in the overtime.

* Updates, corrections, comments would be very much welcome! I got the info from my dad who got to watch the game because I was in a seminar. Who scored the highest? What were the other highlights of the game? Another update would be posted after I watched the replay. 😀

* Go USTE! We, Thomasians, hoped; you guys delivered! Nice! You brought the glory of ’96 back to USTe in 2006 indeed! Congratulations to everyone on the team! Wish I was there to watch and cheer you on! ^^, You made us proud!

if my info-bank is correct (meaning my prof in la salle), pido was said to be really emotional about the event since exactly this year, he was a player in uaap’s finals – it was his graduating year and ust lost to ue by one point – and now, sweet come-back!

also, my prof says, during the time pido went pro under coach norman black, he was one of his bench warmers, and now grasshopper rises up to his master! yay!

i loved the banner of uste during the game: “Bring back the glory days of 96 at season 69.”

we were fortunate enough to watch the game at office, thomasians and la sallians cheering against ateneans (and one iska! go katipunan daw e!) it was really a glorious day!

the sun is indeed yellow! even amidst MILENYO!

  9. KV Said:

    Congratulations UST!!!

This season’s finals was the best I’ve ever witnessed 🙂

  10. maverick Said:

Hehe.

    UAAP Ayos! 😀

  11. stayz Said:

Nice game guys! I must admit, it really was a close fight. If I had a heart attack, I would’ve died right there! Honestly, I love how our school and Ateneo were being civil to each other. It goes to show how we were trained and educated by our schools.

To the Growling Tigers, thank you for bringing back my school spirit. Haha! By the way, back in college, I was a HUGE FAN of yours..actually, di lang fan..stalker! right, Monica? :p

  12. dolphene Said:

Congratulations to the Growling Tigers for playing an awesome game. Saludo ako sa inyo dahil kahit papaano, malinis ang laro ninyo and both students and alumni are respectful of other ballclubs’ players.

Kasi, although trashtalk is expected (And admittedly, fun, to do) during competitions I was totally appalled sa klase ng paglalapastangan, pambabastos and (get this) spitting (as in dura) by Ateneo fans sa mga di-taga Ateneo. And I was more appalled to see that sinisimulan ito ng mga Alumni ng Ateneo! Talk about “good manners” and being “people for others.” Ang masasabi ko lang ay, yeah, right.

Taga-UP po ako, pero kampi ako sa UST sa championship. Maraming salamat for playing a killer game. 🙂 Til we meet again next year. Congrats ulit and mabuhay po kayo.

  13. Lee Villanueva Said:

Way to go, Tigers. I’m so proud of Coach Pido and the rest of the gang for winning the crown. It’s been ten years of waiting and now, we finally have it. Because of this victory, I feel so much blessed as a Thomasian lalo na at graduating pa ako. Iba yung pakiramdam kahit na hindi ikaw yung naglalaro sa court. Paano pa kaya sina Jhervy and company? Magandang-maganda ang pag-exit ni Evangelista.

Coach Pido is so great. First year pa lang niya mag-coach sa Tigers and nakuha na agad yung trophy. Astig talaga!

I would also like to congratulate Ateneo for giving up a good fight. Magagaling sila esp. Intal, Escalona, Tiu, etc. of course under a a great coach Norman Black. But of course, no one can deny the fact that we beat them fairly, despite those rumors of lutuan, etc…

    Go, Mighty Tigers!

  14. rose Said:

Go Uste!! Congrats. Ang galing nyo…Sa mga taga Ateneo, Inggit lang kayo..Masyado kasi kayong mayayabang……..Good luck to season 70..

  15. lol Said:

Congrats to GROWLING TIGERS!!!. Alam ko panalo na sila sa Game 3 at magcha champion kasi nung GAME 2, tinambakan nila ang Ateneo by 16 points.. ANG LUPET ANO..Congrats na din sa ATENEO..mABUHAY ANG UST….. GO USTE.. GOGOGO…

  16. G. C. UANAN Said:

When I was in the Philippines last June, I met Fr. Franklin Beltran, OP on a plane from Tuguegarao City to Manila. Fr. Franklin was the most basketball active Dominican when I was a seminarian at the UST Central Seminary. He is the former sports coordinator of Letran during the time of Samboy Lim and he was the PE Director of UST during the high school days of Marlou Aquino and EJ Feihl. When I played as a Varsity of the Central Seminary (known as ECCLE in the intramurals), he was the manager of the College of Education Varsity. When, I asked him how the UST Tigers will fare on this year’s UAAP Basketball, he said “they will surprise everybody”.

And so, the Tigers have, indeed, surprised everybody. From the cellar of the first round eliminations (they were at the bottom because one after the other, the great players were either sick or injured) they rose to 3rd for the final four. They have already made Thomasians like me proud by securing the no. 3 spot. At the Final Four play-offs, all the more they surprised everybody by beating the favored UE Warriors which enjoyed a twice to beat privilege. Reaching the Finals was already quite an achievement for a team that was never expected by experts to be part of the final four casts.

Game 1 showed the inexperience of the young squad as they bungled a won game with that last one second defensive lapse as they lost 73-72. But in game two, they have proven that they are in the Finals not by sheer luck by clobbering the Blue Eagles 87-71. The game 3 overtime win has proven all pundits wrong. They bagged the Crown with a 76-74 win over the Blue Eagles. This UAAP Championship will be one for the books. It has all the elements of a classic that basketball fans will savor years and decades from now. It was a real Cinderella finish for a young team with a Rookie coach- Pido Jarencio who during his time as a Goldie (the tigers were Goldies at that time) was not able to bring the gold as a lonesome hero of the then UST Goldies in 1984 in a classic match with UE’s Allan Caidic for the 1984 UAAP Finals.

The win brought the old glory we savored during the four-peat years from1993-1996. I was lucky to be at the UST Central Seminary in those years. I remember going from one Dominican priest to another to ask for most sought after UAAP Championship tickets in all of those years. There was even a time when I had to buy a ringside ticket from the driver of Dennis Espino. But it was Fr. Virgilio Ojoy, OP, the UST Secretary-General at that time, who pampered us with ringside tickets.

I can imagine the Thomasians having a grand victory party at the UST Grounds at this very moment. During the four-peat years, there were roasted calves and packed dinner in each victory celebration. As they celebrate, I am sure they are shouting these cheers over and over again till their voices become hoarse:

    GO USTE
Go USTe! Go USTe! Go USTe!Go! Go! Go! Go! (4x)(2x clap) U(2x clap) S(2x clap) T(2x clap) UST Tigers! 1, 2, 3, 4(5x clap) U(5x clap) S(5x clap) T(5x clap) UST TIGERS!

And lastly they will be singing this Hymn with great pride:

    UST HYMN
    God of all nations
Merciful Lord of our restless being
    Sweep with your golden lilies
    This fountain of purest light
Trace with the sails of the galleons
    The dream beyond our seeing
Touch with the flame of your kindness
The gloom of our darkest night
Keep us in beauty and truth and virtues impassioned embrace
    Ever your valiant legions
    Imbued with unending grace

Congratulations to coach Pido and the Tigers and also to the Tigresses for winning the women’s championship too.

  17. Lee Villanueva Said:

Erratum lang po. “Putting up” instead of “giving up” dun sa 4th par. anyway, congrats pa rin sa USTE. Ang saya!!! Woohoo!!!

  18. Michiko Said:

Victory party later (Oct 4) at UST, 6pm =)

  19. stayz Said:

Mitch! Are you going later? 🙂

  20. Monix Said:

    yah… stalkers… hahahaha!

Oh Well, i am so proud to be a thomasian! 🙂 so happy to have watched the whole series live… ang lupet ng school spirit sa araneta… imagine, 20T people pouring their hearts out to cheer for both teams… I love Pido! 🙂

nung Sunday, we were at UST, dumaan ung bus tapos nagbukas ng window c Coach and cnabi niya dun sa mga nakapila for tickets na “Mananalo Tayo! :)” and he surely kept his word 🙂

We really deserve to be where we are, the team worked so hard for this victory and the prayers of the whole thomasian community were with them. Ang Saya! 🙂 di ko parin maget-over ang feeling 🙂

my salute to the Ateneans for being so respectful and civil for USTe’s win. I had goosebumps when the two squads exchanged cheers, the Blue Babble Batallion played “Go Uste!” and likewise, the Yellow Jackets played “Go Ateneo!”

TOMASINO Ako! 🙂 We cam to cheer – – – AND TO WIN IT WITH NO FEAR!

  21. ria Said:

im so proud to be thomasian… imagine we won against ateneo?!!? like a fairytale come true talaga… i admire jervy for being down to earth as well as Duncil.. For the ateneans, you also did a great job guys! (specially Intal)… Thank God for having us this victory… This could not be happen without him… Thank you Lord!

  22. justin Said:

history tells us that david slew goliath and it was in the obscure city of waterloo where the great conqueror napoleon bonaparte collapsed.

ust, touted as the underdog (limited only to this season), just repeated history.

i am proud not to have devoured the eagles (favored, in this season) but simply because we won the championship. the opponents are simply immaterial.

    go USTe!
