We won! Ateneo vs UST UAAP Finals – Game 2

Game 3 – Championship update here!

 —

A quick update:

I just got news that the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers finally grabbed a huge chunk off the Championship trophy! The UST Tigers won Game 2 of the 69th Season of the UAAP Basketball Finals, ending the match with a 87-71 score. Weeh! I am so happy!

Go USTe!!!

The Ateneo Blue Eagles won Game 1, 73-72, last September 23. The Tigers and Eagles are now tied with 1-1 card. Game 3 will surely be an interesting game.

Random Fact #1: This is the first time that ADMU and UST faced off in a UAAP Finals.

Random Fact #2: UST last won the title in 1996. Will it this year’s team bring the Glory of ‘96 back to UST in 2006?

We, Thomasians, certainly hope so!

Full update next time! I’m just so happy that I had to post this! More info about Game 2 next time. Hahaha. See you in the Finals, guys! =)

Tattoo on my mind (again) and piercings

[mood] brain-addled
[opening theme] Hide and Seek – Imogen Heap

Brandom Boyd of Incubus - his forearm tattoo showing during one of his performancesSexy. I dunno why but I really find people with tats rather sexy. Why they hold so much appeal to my eyes, I have yet to figure out. I’ve realized my fascination with guys who have tats on their forearms two Sundays ago. I almost pulled off a steathy-ninja stalk when three guys passed by; the one on the middle had a lovely dark tribal tat on his right forearm that went up to his upper arm. I wanted to drool for some reason and my eyes just can’t help but follow his movements. I wanted to poke the guy and ask if I could take a picture of the tat. Never knew that I had it in me: you know, the stalkerish train of thoughts.

But two things held me back: (1) My father dragged me inside a store which I couldn’t remember and (2) I can’t speak Korean. Or Mandarin. The guys were foreigners, that’s for sure.

Then I remembered another incident when I can’t tear off my eyes at a guy’s forearm. My cousin Jobert and I were about to change our money to peso when another group of guys fell in line and yep, the guy had a tat on his right forearm. Gah! I was surreptitiously stealing glances at the tat design when I noticed another thing: he had ear piercings. *waterfall of tears* Darn it. Another weakness.

Not many people can pull off the tattooed and pierced look so don’t think that I’d always drool at the sight of every guy that has a forearm tat. I rather have my standards. *Sigh.* … continue reading this entry.

The Suffering – Coheed and Cambria

Is there a word or right to say
Even in this old fashioned way?

How to Save a Life – The Fray

Step one you say we need to talk
He walks you say sit down it’s just a talk
He smiles politely back at you
You stare politely right on through
Some sort of window to your right
As he goes left and you stay right
Between the lines of fear and blame
And you begin to wonder why you came

Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life … continue reading this entry.

Ateneo VS UST in the 2006 UAAP Finals? Finally!

Game 2 Update here and the Championship-Game 3 update here.

*   *   *

It’s been years.

We were Seniors in the university then when we had a Sports Journalism subject. Part of our exercises were to attend the games of the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers, cover their games and submit the story the next day. I love basketball. I love shouting at any sports game to root for my favored team. I don’t care if I get a sore throat the next day but, well, I’m that enthusiastic.

UST Growling Tigers. Obviously.
I swear, the barkada would have enjoyed attending much of those games if the Tigers had only won. Sadly, the last time that the Tigers had a place in the Final Four was still when we were freshmen (AY 01-02). It was such a hassle to go to Araneta Coliseum (in our uniforms, no less) or Rizal Coliseum and get back to Espana just in time for the next class. It was no joke.

And then finally, two years after I had graduated from the univ, my sis Karen told me that we made it to the Finals against the Ateneo Blue Eagles! Apparently, the Tigers had defeated the University of the East Warriors (whom I was told was a twice-to-beat team) Yay! We are so going to watch. Ha!

Random Fact: The Tigers were the first team to end the winning streak of the Blue Eagles this UAAP Season. w00t!

To all Thomasians who had unluckily stumbled on this post: see you there at the Araneta Coliseum!

I’ll edit this post when I finally research the current roster of our alma mater’s basketball team. That is, after I’ve finall finished practicing my “Go, USTe!” cheer.

Note: Congrats to the University of Santo Tomas Salinggawi Dance Troupe for winning the 5th time in UAAP Cheerdance Competition! You made us proud to be Thomasians here at Hinge! Ian Fegalan and Ren Berioso, classmates, I know you’re pretty darn happy of the legacy you left. I3UST.

First Time

Hindi na mauulit ang time na to.

So this is why those first times occupy a special place in our hearts? Because the feeling is all new, you just have to take in everything in relation to the feeling.

First best friend. First fallen tooth. First 10 yards on the bike without support before falling flat on your side. First scar. First successful upperhand service in volleyball. First home run. First kick in the groin in kindergarten. First crush. First confrontation with an older sister of the kid I used to bully. First honors. First pang of jealousy. First suicidal thoughts. First thoughts to enter nunnery. First manuscript for a school play. First broken heart. First failed grade. First balut.

So many firsts in one little lifetime.

I’m being a sentimental fool over work. Another first.

Happy first anniversary to our company. And happy first year to me in this company. =)

Splurging Part II – Movies

For some unfathomable reason, my father dragged me out to bed before the clock hit noon last Sunday so we could go have lunch at a mall. It proved to be a very drastic day for my thinning wallet. I’m actually starting to get worried: am I starting to vent out my so-called angst and frustation on *gasp* shopping?

Let me enlighten you a bit. Some days ago, I was kind of sick (no–I had been sick and I still am sick with the last remnants of the coughs). Was so bummed out of my wits that I had to buy several items: seven books (three of which I haven’t finished yet, but managed to browse from time to time) and a couple of new albums just to, well, appease myself. Lift my spirits.

And now that I’m having a little “I’m-so-not-in-the-mood-that-I-want-to-be-bitchy-but-wouldn’t-because-that-would-be-really-mean-and-I-know-I’m-not-mean-so-that-leaves-me-with-a-freakin-conversation-with-myself-and-I-had-to-really-stop-doing-that-because-I’d-look-really-weird-even-though-I’m-really-weird-yet-wouldn’t-really-want-to-broadcast-said-weirdness-to-the-www-which-still-leaves-me-talking-to-self-and-I-want-to-stop-it-ahh!-how-about-doing-something-that-is-so-unMitch-like-taking-supposedly-existent-saladforabrain-off-problems-so-how-about-we-try—” [this is where you insert something random]

Shopping. Second time in a row. I splurged. Ack. I first bought really cheesy movies (fits the mood of my parallel self): Drive Me Crazy (1999) starring Melissa Joan Hart and Adrian Grenier. Took Two Weeks Notice (2002) starring Hugh Grant and Sandra Bullock off the rack next. Grabbed The Replacements (2000) starring Gene Hackman and Keanu Reeves next and promptly paid for the three at the cashier. I was about to go out the store when my eyes caught some oldie movies near the door and my eyes landed on The Breakfast Club (1985) starring Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson, Anthony Hall, Molly Ringwald and Ally Sheedy; my dad was reading Saturday Night Fever’s (1977) precis, so I promptly grabbed said movie from his hands and headed for the cashier again.

I watched four movies that night (all of which I thoroughly enjoyed; yeah, it’s a little pity party with myself, some Fita biscuits and a tomato–but for the first time in that week, I either “awww-ed” or laughed out loud alone.) I was saving Saturday Night Fever for next Saturday. Yeah, it’s so cornballs to do so, I know. So what?

Point is, they weren’t in my plans. I even bought Games Master Philippines’ last issue (Collector’s Item, by the way–cuz, yup, it’s gonna be their last issue…)

Again, they weren’t in my plans. Just like all the bracelets I have in my room. Or the notebooks that gather years of dust before I decide to use them for my rants. I never noticed it before, and the only question running through my head is why I haven’t noticed it before. I’ve thought of them as little, sinless indulgences but seriously, it’s gonna cost me something in the future.

Or maybe I’m just being hard on myself because I really hardly buy myself anything unless needed? Is that why I might be feeling a little guilty because I sort of “bought myself some happiness?”

Letter No. 2

I am not perfect. I can try to change, but I can’t do it overnight.

Newsflash? I AM trying. If that isn’t enough for you, then it’s either I may not be trying hard enough, or I’ll just never be able to meet your expectations. I am just an ordinary person trying to excel so cut me some slack and give me some credit.

The bullshit thing about trying sometime is that it hardly gets recognized. I’m not some attention-whore who would love to hear praises about the work I’ve done. What I just need is some consideration.

You guys always say that I lack the trait. Well newsflash numero dos, maybe I am not the only one? Maybe it should work both ways? If I may be so bold to say so, I’ve obediently followed every f***ing directions you’ve given me. And you’ve known that I’ve regretted some of those times. But I’m done with regretting how I usually blamed myself in the past. Which is why I don’t like getting blamed for something “where I apparently didn’t try hard enough.”

Maybe I’m not just the person you thought me to be.

Let me grow alone sometimes: I do need the space.

Like a tree, I need my space. Let me branch out, let my roots grab hold on to the soil, let the fruits I bear reach the prime without getting poked at ever so often.

You should know by now that I’m a sensitive little tree and my fruits bruise easily.

Having two Thursdays in a week and a very pleasant surprise

[mood] slighty freaked out; surprised
[song title that befits the post] (If Only I Could) Turn Back Time – Aqua

I’ve admitted to being weird years ago already. But yesterday had just thrown me off course.

I woke up and thought that it was Thursday already. I made several mistakes of assuming that it was Thursday yesterday. It was just weird and for the first time in my life, my weirdness freaked me out. :| Yes, people: I’ve become accustomed to my weird behaviors in the past but this one just plastered a “Huh?-look” on my face.

Now that it’s really Thursday, I feel an odd sort of deja vu. That it was the so-called Thursday all over again from yesterday except that I’m wearing different clothes and editing different articles.

“I don’t care if monday’s blue
Tuesday’s grey and Wednesday too
Thursday i don’t care about you
It’s Friday i’m in love”
Friday, I’m In Love,
The Cure

See, even The Cure couldn’t bring a proper description on their Wednesday. I’m now convinced that I really lost a Wednesday this week. Nothing could convince me otherwise. Yet.

I got a very pleasant surprise from my high school friend, Edgar Aguilar.

Note first that I’m the kind of person who is very much wary of surprises. Surprises are nice, but I’m a generally suspicious person. I favor things to be more predictable (but yup, somewhere deep down the cresses of my being–I admire people who can withstand unpredictability and changes). Epoy, as we’ve fondly called him ever since, had warned me that he has a surprise for me when he dropped by the area today.

Anxious and a bit apprehensive, though excited, I went down to take a break for a while when he texted that he’s close. And as he neared where I stood, my eyes grew wide as I recognized one of my oldest friends since grade school: he brought Rica Evangelista with him!

Rica and I started to get close with each other when we around Grade 3 pupils at Blessed Christ Child Montessori Foundation–ang paaralang walang hagdan–in Balayan, Batangas. She would call my mom whenever there’s some bully making me cry. We were both, um, vertically challenged and sort of skinny so we can hardly to physical harm to any of the big boys who would mercilessly tease us. We would tambay at their boutique during our long lunch breaks. She was also the first person who invited me to have lunch with her family at their house sometimes. She was the first friend I invited over to our house in Barangay Canda, a rather sleepy and dusty town surrounded by hectares of sugarcane field, mango trees, and carabaos. I actually consider her as the first friend I have after being transferred from a public school to Montessori in Grade 1.

We used to play a lot, mimicking Sailor Moon’s adventures, play volleyball or tell spooky stories with our other friends. I remember her telling us that there are dwarves in their house and it made me wonder then if I could ever have a chance of seeing the dwarves if I hang out at their house more. She also introduced me to the world of fiction other than the fairy tales and encyclopedia that I usually read at home: I started reading Sweet Valley and years later, I wondered about the technicalities of writing and started writing my own fiction.

In a brief warm hug that I shared with her when we met again after losing contact for more than five years, I remembered all those good times.

We lost contact when she had to transfer schools from Batangas to Calamba, Laguna for her secondary schooling.

In that brief warm hug that we shared, I forgot about the years of not being able to ask her how she is. I hope that we’ll meet up again soon.

Epoy, set a date and let’s get the barkada together. Thanks for the very wonderful surprise.

And even though the moment passed me by
I still can’t turn away
Cause all the dreams you never thought you’d lose
Got tossed along the way
And letters that you never meant to send
Get lost or thrown away

And now we’re grown up orphans
That never knew their names
We don’t belong to no one
That’s a shame
But if you could hide beside me
Maybe for a while
And I won’t tell no one your name … continue reading this entry.

The Chronicles of Life and Death – Good Charlotte

Rumor Mill: Benji and Joel Madden have been reported to team with Marvin Scott Jarett to produce youth-oriented films. The production fit, Fast Future Films, is said to have been working already on Valley of the Damned, a thriller story set in Phoenix where a brother and sister find a body of another teenager. You’re covered in blood.
They’re all so happy you’ve arrived.
The doctor cuts your cord.
He hands you to your mom.
She sets you free into this life.
And where do you go with no destination, no maps to guide you.
Wouldn’t you know that it doesn’t matter, we all end up the same.
